Your searches, routes and names stay on your phone. There is no account, no analytics SDK and no ads.
What stays on the phone
- Searches and routes. Place search and turn-by-turn run entirely on the device against the map data you downloaded. They never touch the network. Your search and route history is stored only on the phone and is not included in any names file you export.
- Your names, favorites and notes. Stored on the phone. They ride inside your phone's own backup (iCloud or Google backup) if you have it on, and in any
.akanamesfile you choose to export. - Your location. Used on the phone for the map, for ranking search results and for guidance. It is never sent to us or to anyone else.
- Voice search. Speech is recognized on the phone. Audio never leaves it.
What leaves the phone, and when
- Map downloads and streaming. Regions you choose are downloaded from our file host (Cloudflare). When "Stream map tiles" is on, areas you have not downloaded are fetched as you look at them. These are ordinary web requests for map files; we keep no access log and there is no account to tie them to.
- Shared collections. Nothing is shared until you invite someone. When you do, that collection's names, favorites and notes travel between the phones in it as blobs encrypted end to end with a key that only those phones hold. Our relay stores what it cannot read and keeps no access log. Removing someone re-keys the collection.
- Feedback you send. If you shake the phone and tap Send, we receive your note, the app version and device model, and — only if you tick them — a marked-up screenshot and a diagnostic log of the last 15 minutes. The log records app events, timings and counts, not your searches, routes or names, and you can read every line of it before it goes. We use reports to fix bugs and delete them on request.
- A daily "I was opened". Once a day, the first time you use the app, it tells our server it was opened: whether it is the iPhone or Android app, the app version, and a random installation id the app made on your phone when it was first installed. That id is a random number tied to nothing: there is no account, and the message carries no location, no names and no settings. We keep one line per install per day, so we can tell how many devices used the app today, this month or this year, and nothing else. Deleting the app deletes the id; a reinstall gets a new one.
What we never do
No accounts. No sign-in. No analytics or crash-reporting SDKs. No advertising. No selling or sharing of data with third parties. No reading of your names — we couldn't if we wanted to.
Deleting your data
Uninstalling the app deletes everything on the phone. Leaving a collection deletes your device's encrypted record from the relay. To delete a feedback report, email hello@akamaps.com with the approximate date you sent it.
